다시 보고 살피어 느껴 회포 풀어 잘 다녀 오세요

한창 감수성 예민한 젊은 날 머나먼 이국의 외로움 속에 고해의 일편주에서 키워온 위로 오직 하나님을 향하여 신앙의 모태로 회귀하려는가. 마치 역행의 귀거래사를 연상케 하는 "존경하는 벗님들께"를 전자우편(e-mail)으로 접하였다.

그 주인공은 우리 상록회 중진 회원인 최효원 장로님.

그러니까 꼭 60년 전 느닷없는 공산침공으로 온통 나라가 쑥내밭 초토화로 변해버린 격전지에서 오직 애국충성 일념으로 사선을 넘나들다 행불간 잠시 모진 생지옥에서 벗어나 꿈같은 8개월 간 미국 군사유학에서 맺었던 깊은 인연과 그 추억을 평생 잊지 못한다. 

아련한 회억을 더듬어 이제 막 인생 최종점의 갓문턱에 들어서려는 원숙나이(85세)에도 불고하고 오는 주말 9월 25일(토) 인천공항발 그 곳을 찾아가는 길이다. 거기는 미중남부 오클라호마주 시골도시 로오톤(Lawton)에 있는 빌하이츠(Bealhights) 장로교회와 인근의 미육군 포병학교.

유별나게 덥고 기록적인 비 바람과 태풍까지  몰아친 그동안健安 하시고 家內 均安 하시겠지요? 오늘은 푸른 하늘에서 해빛이 내려쪼이니 殘暑가 김정일처럼 최후발악을 하는듯 합니다.

저는 이달 25일 부터 약 1개월간 미국을 다녀오려고 합니다.

오래간만에 딸네집엘 다녀 오려고 합니다만, 이와 미국 가는 길에 6.25 전쟁중 미국 포병학교(오크라호마州 Ft.Sill) 한국군 특별 초등군사반에 갔을  때, 다운 타운인  Lawton시내에 있는 Bealheights 장로교회에 매 일요일이면 그 교회에 가서 주일예배를 드리고 목사님과 여러 교우들 , 어린 소년 소녀들과 교우 하면서 주님의 은혜속에서 신앙심을 지키며, 풍전등화격인 조국의 운명, 소식도 모르는 가족의 안녕을 기원하며 희망을 갖고 지냈습니다.
그 때 그들이 보여준  친절과 사랑이 큰 힘이 되였으며 그때의 아름다웠던 추억은 영원히 잊을 수가 없었습니다.그럼에도 그동안 한번도 방문치 못했음을 안타갑게 생각 하다가 더 늙어 보행이 어려워지기전에 이번에 찾아 가기로 결심 하였습니다. 

인타넷을 검색 했더니 그 교회 홈페이지가 떠올랐습니다. 대북 풍선을 하는 이민복단장을 인타넸에서 찾아냈드시.참으로 우리는 편리한 세상에 살고 있습니다.홈페이지에 올라 있는 그 교회 사진을 보니 아주 현대식인 건물로, 우리가 다니던 50년대의 그 때 건물과는 격세지감을 주었습니다. 미국에서 젊은이들이 교회에 나오지 앟아 교회를 유지할 수 없어 교회가 매물로 나오고 문닫는 예가 많다고 들었는데 이 교회는 질적으로나 量的으로 부흥 되는 축복 받은 교회임에 틀림 없어 기뻤습니다.

그래서 그 교회 목사님께 제 사정을 얘기 하고 방문의 뜻을 벍혔더니 방문을 환영 하다는 회신이 왔으며,그러나 제가 擧名(거명)한 분들은 이미 하늘나라로 떠났다는 것입니다.물론 목사님은 그때 60세쯤 되였었으니까 그렇다 하드래도 그때 10대였던 소년 소녀들은 아마 할아버지 할머니가 되였어도  그 지방에 살고 있으면 만닐 수 있지 않겠나 해서 그때 함께 찍은 어린이들 사진을 보냈습니다.

얘기가 길어 졌습니다.저의 딸은 뉴요크에서 북쪽으로 1시간 거리인 커넷트카트주 웨스트포트라는 곳에 살고 있습니다.그러나 포병학교는 오크라호마주에 있기 때문에 우선 텍사스주 Dallas로 가서 뉴요크에서 오는 달과 달라스 공항에서 만나 車를 한대 렌트 하여 Lawton시로 가려고 합니다.

또 미국 포병학교에는 한국군 포병장교가 연락장교로 파견되여 있다고 해서  그와도 연락이 닿았습니다. 그의 말에 의하면 달라스에서 로튼으로는 항공편이 있다고 합니다만 우리는 자동차로 드라이빙 하면서 구경 하며 갈까 합니다. 

저의 방미 일정은:

9월 25일(토) 11:00 CE-31편 인천---달라스,25일 09;45도착

   차량으로 로튼으로 이동,

26일(일) 빌하이쯔 장로교회 낮예배 참석.

27일(월) 미 포병학교 방문. 달라스로 이동.

28일 달라스____뉴요크,웨스트포트로 이동

29일-----10월 20일간 딸네집을 근거지로 하여 뉴요크 관광.

  뉴져지,시카고등 친지 방문.필라델피아(손녀 대학 방문)

10월 21일--25일 달라스 관광,친지 딸 결혼 참석.

10월 26일 달라스 출발

10월 27일 (수) 16:55분 인천공항 도착.

Dear Pastor Butler,

My name is HyoWon Choi. My daughter and I would like to visit your church on 9/26/10 during Sunday service. It has been 60 years since I last attended a service there and I am very much looking forward to it.

From Sep. 1951 to April 1952 I was attending OBC at Ft. Sill representing the Korean Army during the Korean War. I had the privilege of attending Sunday Services during my stay as I had to learn to operate artilleries fully before I was sent back to my country to fight the communist off the land God gave us 5000+ years ago. It was uncertain, heart-breaking, heart-wrenching and a nervous time of learning,  but at the same time the church attendance offered me an experience of unsurpassed God’s Peace in the midst of anxiety.

A few of the names I recall and am grateful for their kindness and care are: Rev. & Mrs. Hanna, Mr. & Mrs. Upjohn, Mr. & Mrs. Sherman, the Ebisch sisters, Linda and Yolanda. I suppose I won’t be able to say “thank you” in person to many of whom showered me with brotherly and sisterly love since I was 26 and am now 85. It was the one shining beacon of joy for me during the time my country was going through a painful time as the war ravaged the nation.

The Army put me on the front lines until the Armistice, and through prayers such as yours and my family, and God’s Mercy, I made it through the War. I continued to serve my country as a career army officer mostly stationed on the DNZ (front line) until my retirement in 1976 as a Colonel. After the Army I worked for a stone fabricating export/import company for another 20+ years.

There was nothing left standing in Korea. America’s staunch economic and militarily support for my country laid an important foundation toward a modern and  democratic country. Koreans of my generation feel the utmost gratitude for America not only for standing by Korea, but the blood you shed for our country’s sake. I can’t help praising and thanking my God the maker of Heaven and earth for moving people’s hearts in America to orchestrate the UN to fight against the communist North. Korea owes America a big “Thank you!”  

I now dedicate my life to informing and spreading the Gospel to North Koreans, as well as the freedom we Koreans have as an open and democratic society, through “Balloon Ministry”—where we launch tens of thousands of Helium balloons into North Korea carrying Gospel literature, US $1.00 bills, first-aid items and necessities that eventually land in areas throughout the country. I am also a very active member of a church in Seoul.
